FAQ's - Tooth Whitening
- Why do teeth get stained and discoloured?
- There are many causes. The most common ones are due to eating food, coffee, tea, wine, soft drinks and smoking. Our teeth naturally discolour with time during the course of our lives. Even so-called naturally yellow teeth can be whitened.
- How does teeth whitening work and how do you get whiter teeth?
- Whitening gel contains an active ingredient called Carbamide Peroxide. The Carbamide Peroxide degrades in the mouth to release oxygen. The oxygen reacts with the organic stains and discolouration on the teeth, oxidizing them, which makes the teeth whiter without damaging them. Artificial teeth and fillings are not affected by whitening.
- Can I whiten artificial teeth? (E.g. plastic or porcelain)
- Artificial teeth, crowns, fillings or other orthodontics are not affected. Teeth whitening does not damage artificial teeth or orthodontics (e.g. fillings). It is still possible to whiten your teeth however if the artificial teeth, crowns, fillings, or other orthodontics are in visible places (such as on your front teeth) then they may become more visible as the surrounding natural teeth become whiter giving a unaesthetic look necessitating their replacement.
- Is teeth whitening permanent?
- A completed teeth whitening treatment lasts for several years and your teeth will always be whiter than before the treatment. Naturally, food, drink (in particular, coffee, tea, coke and red wine) as well as smoking will gradually, over time, darken your teeth. In order to keep your teeth white, you can undergo top-up whitening treatments once every 6-12 months.
- Does teeth whitening have any side-effects?
- Some people may experience increased sensitivity to hot and cold water in the teeth and gums; this is only temporary. The teeth whitening products and gel we use is specifically designed to avoid shooting pain in the teeth and does not contain the substances that normally cause this pain. Some people may experience gum irritation if they have sensitive gums. In those instances, we recommend applying a thin layer of Vaseline to the gums before each treatment. There are no other side effects.
- How do I store the whitening gel and how long before it expires?
- The best place for storing the gel is in the refrigerator. If you store it in the refrigerator it will last for up to one year from the date of purchase. At room temperature, it lasts for up to six months. After this time, the potency of the whitening gel is reduced.
- Who should not whiten their teeth?
- Tooth whitening should not be used if you suffer from advanced gum disease (periodontal disease) or have recently had oral surgery.
Tooth whitening should not be used if you are pregnant or lactating as a precaution. This is because no studies have been carried out to verify it's safety.
